Supporting Kids Through Divorce- Part III: Strengthening Bonds Through Outdoor Activity

by Allen  - May 25, 2024

You knew it was coming, right? I’ve seen firsthand the healing effects of the natural world on adolescents and adults alike.

Engaging in outdoor activities is an excellent way to strengthen the parent-child bond and provide much-needed stress relief during the turbulence of divorce. Here’s why and how outdoor adventures can be beneficial:

  1. Promotes Physical Health: Physical activity is a great stress reliever and promotes overall health. Activities like hiking, biking, climbing, paddling, or playing sports can help your children expend energy and reduce anxiety.
  2. Fosters Connection: Spending time together outdoors allows for uninterrupted quality time. It provides a natural setting for meaningful conversations and shared experiences.
  3. Encourages Mindfulness: The natural world has a calming effect and helps both parents and children practice mindfulness. Being present in the moment together can strengthen your emotional connection.
  4. Builds Resilience: Outdoor activities often involve overcoming challenges, which can build resilience and confidence in children. The outdoor environment is the perfect impartial teacher, with lessons learned lasting a lifetime.
  5. Creates Positive Memories: Adventures and fun activities create lasting positive memories. These shared experiences can serve as a foundation for a strong, enduring relationship between parent and child. Think of it as a deposit in your emotional and relational bank account.

Allen

I am a father, husband, coach, outdoor guide, educator, and middling endurance athlete who believes that small changes make a BIG difference.

I believe that when we identify the patterns in our lives, we are able to make changes to create the best versions of ourselves.

I know that divorce is devastating. I also know that we can come through on the other side not just as survivors, but as examples who can provide hope and inspiration for others.

I'd be honored to hear your story, and to help you write the next chapters.
